How to set up a database before using our Magento 2 GeoIP extension?

Database types

Our module uses the GeoIP2 City database provided by MaxMind company. There are free and paid versions of the GeoIP database available.

Both database versions provide the same address information:

• Country
• Region
• City
• Postal Code

The only difference is that the paid version is far more accurate and bigger than the free one.

How to download the database?

First you have to Sign up for a MaxMind account (no purchase required). There you will be able to set your password and create a license key.

Then please enter your license key in GeoIP configuration and press the Download Database button.

Note: If you don’t want to use an automatic downloader, you can download the archive manually from the GeoIP download page. You have to upack it, and copy *.mmdb file to the /var/swissup/geoip directory. Rename the database file into maxmind.mmdb then.

After finishing the downloading you’ll see the date of the last update below the Download Database button.
